6. Technicaldescription
Beforegoing
intothe subjeels of maintenanceand
koubleshootiag,
we would
like to
provide
a
brief
description
onlhe
fu_lional units
ofthe
gas equipment,
which
will
makefor a better understanding
of
these items.
6.1 The gas equipment
(Fig.
D)
The
gas
connector(D14)
is
connectedto a
manual
shut
off
valve (D13),normally"to be left open(handtein
alignmenl
withlhe
gas
flow).
The
valve
(D13)
isconnected
to the
combination
control
valve
(seefollowingitem)
by
a
union
(D15).
If the Refrigerator
is
to be remoeedfor maintenance
or
the
like,
closethe
valve and uncouplethe union.The valvewill
keep
the end
of
the
connector
sealed,
thus maintaining
the gas
supplysystemoperational
Toreconnec
the Relr_gerator,
simply
hook-upthe
union
again,openthe valveand
use
detergentto
check
for
leaksat Eneunionandadjoining fittings.The
union
should
not
be overl[ghtened.Tighlenfirm_ withthe hand
and
thena larther 10 or 20
degreeswithan open-endwrench,
oruntil
there areno leaks.
6.2 Combination control valve (Fig. G)
The conlrol has
several
functions.
The
inlet (G2)
carries
a
gum
filler Io
remove
cedaincontaminants
from
the
gas.Alter
the lilter
comesa
se[eolorvalve
withits
shaft
(G3)
with
two
positions:
openor
closed.
Usethis
to
turn
off the Refrigerator,sinceit is
not
enoughto
turnthe
thermostat(G4)down

position.
Togetherwith
the
selector
comesthe flame-failure
dark>e,
connected
by (GT)
to
the lhermocouple(H1) at
the burner.II the flameshould
gooul
for anyreason, Ibis

gassupplywithin

prevenling
lurther amountsof unbumtgas from
escaping.

gas
supply
open
manually, by depressing (G3), until the flame

6.3. Testing the
flame-failure
device
(Fig.
C)
The
deviceis faiPsafe:any malfunction,suchas poor
electdc
contacl,
etc.,
will
causeit to
close.
Even so,
it
must
be checkedlor properoperation
when
the
Relffgeralor
isfirst
installedandthen periodicallylaler
on
(see under" Periodic Maintenance").The follczwing
is
to
be

Placethe Refrigeratorin
operatlonwith
Ihe thermostat
setto
the coldestposilion.
b) Closeandthenimmediately
open

In about
30
to 40
seconds you will
hear a slight but very dislinct "c1_c_€'
to signify that the
valve hasclosed.
6.4 The thermostatic valve and the bypass
(Fig.
G)
The
temperature
is
sensed
via
a copper
capillarytube
(Gt) rising
behind
the
Rel_gerator(D3)
andw_h
the tip
reaching
into
a receplacle
on Ihe
evaporator
(El).
The
lemperature
o!
the tip
andthepositronofthe
shaft
(G4) causethe passageotgas to
the bume_
to open
to
a
greateror lesserextenl.
Whenreinstalling
the
capillary
tube altera repair,makesure that it fits properlyinto the
_eceptacleand
caulk
the cutlet {D2)with sealing
compound,
Even
whenthethem]esteLla
valve
is
closed,
a small
amountof
gas
still p_ssesIhroughto keepthe flame
alight and Ihe Freezer
compartment
operating,
This gas is meteredbyan orifice[n the bypassscrew
(G6). The
orifice
is nonadjustableandthe screw
indicatesthe capacity.
